About
I have always had a keen interest in computers. I’ve discovered a passion for application development in recent years with a focus on working on open source applications. This is due to the mass collaboration that generally goes hand in hand with open source. This community orientated development structure provides a great way to share ideas and solutions. In the years since I started working more heavily in the development of applications, I have become a proficient programmer with basic knowledge of visual basic, JavaScript and C# and a more refined knowledge of PHP. I am now also starting to work with C++.
As a member of the Mozilla community, I have gained the opportunities to put some of my knowledge into use while developing a community game known as mozhunt. I have also been to Mozilla events including MozCamp EU 2009 in Prague. During these events I have learned more about how to apply my knowledge as well as being taught some new concepts that apply to the improvement of the web. Whilst I gained a greater interest in the way Mozilla itself works.
I will be heading off to university in 2011 if my exams this year go well and while I am looking forward to an entire course based on Computing, there are a few topics that have really caught my interest. The first of these is the fundamentals of web technology and essential networks as I am already interested in web development but would like to develop what knowledge I have regarding the hardware and the infrastructure of how the Internet currently works. I am also looking forward to studying the way computers and society exist within an interdependent relationship. Computers are being used to a greater extent in modern society and are influencing the way that it progresses. In the same respect, as society changes the way computers are developed and the tasks they are produced to do also change. I would be interested in investigating this social-technological relationship further within the context of a degree level course.
