The Migration

January 18th, 2010 by FuzzyFox with 7 Comments »

It is a trend that is catching on and hopefully will become global. This trend is the migration from Microsoft Internet Explorer to a better browser. After years of trying to convince technologically inept relatives to stop using Internet Explorer, computer geeks worldwide may finally rejoice as they have something new to back up their words. The German and French Governments!

The French government joined Germany today in advising to its citizens to stop using IE and migrate to another browser. Hopefully this will mean a large jump in the amount of Firefox users this month :D

The announcements come after a recent admission by Microsoft that there is a serious security problem that can be found not only one version but in numbers 6, 7, and 8!

Internet security company McAfee pointed out this security vulnerability in Internet Explorer, which allowed hackers in China to attack Google, Adobe and a large number of other companies, including Yahoo and Northrop Grumman.

While Microsoft is working on a fix for the problem, I believe that this is a big, and potentially critical blow to the company and will encourage a large number of people to migrate away from the browser permanently.

My next thought is this… How do we take advantage of this in the Mozilla Community and help people make the right choice when looking for another browser? Not only that, but how do we encourage other governments to follow the German lead and get them to advise people to steer clear of the browser?

Mozilla Music

Employees of a Microsoft Store in Mission Viejo, California, recently started line dancing to the Black Eyed Peas. This looks like a lot of fun. See for yourself!

This combined with a few other things that I have seen recently has inspired me with a great way to celebrate how much Mozilla has done to contribute to the internet.

Okay so here is what I have come up with…

  • We get all those who can play/compose music to create a piece of music that shows the spirit of the Mozilla Community (5mins max maybe).
  • We get all those in the community who can write songs and poems together to come up with an awesome to represent the enthusiasum of the Mozilla Community.
  • Get the entire community to sing and dance to the song with Mozilla logos (Firefox, Thunderbird, etc…).
  • Mash it all together with some lyrics and maybe some motion graphics (in the music video).
  • Release the song (after some editing) and see if it can make the charts!

So to review we would have a song, writen by, composed by, played by, and sung by the Mozilla Community. Lets make history and be the first software community to make a record that hits the charts!

Any comments on improvements or flaws in thie idea then please comment below (forum style) and we can refine and improve upon this!

Bye Bye IE

I may be a die hard fan of all things open source however I do have an interest in certain Microsoft products mainly because some of them do have their advantages. One such a product I have been following the development of is Microsoft Windows 7. Now some of you may be aware of the issues Microsoft is having due to the very valid and needed point that the EU has brought up about them having supremacy over internet browser market share because MS IE is shipped with their Windows operating system. (see here for more information -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Union_Microsoft_antitrust_case). It now seems that this means for MS to ship Windows 7 in the EU at the same time as their global launch Windows 7 (in the EU) will ship without a browser at all!

I get this information from the following quote out of the latest TechNet newsletter (from Microsoft).

You may have seen in the news a few weeks back that, in order for Europe to get Windows 7 at the same time as the global launch on 22 October, Windows 7 will have to be shipped without Internet Explorer. So, when you buy a new computer, you will not have a browser as part of the operating system.

Now to me this is not the solution what they need to do is simply change the default first run page so that it comes up with a third party comparison of the major browsers and then links to each of them followed by a list of all the other browsers.

I may be wrong here but that seems to be a better solution seen as most people setup their internet connection as the first thing they do on their computer. By shipping their OS without one they make is so that it is near impossible for the un-tech-savy users of computers out there to even connect to the internet and even make a choice about which browser they want to use let alone what news site they want to read!

Microsoft. I have a message for you. Well done on F***ing up again. Now not only do you not truly conform to web standards but now you don’t even allow your less technologically advanced users access the internet. Well done indeed.
