Firefox 3.6 – Fashionably Late

January 21st, 2010 by FuzzyFox with 1 Comment »

Okay, so Firefox 3.6 is a little later than planned, however we are sure that you will find the wait has been worth while. As they say in the world of fame, “it is fashionable to be late”. That is not all that is fashionable about this new version of the browser. Oh no, that is just the start of it.

With a new theme system known as Personas you can now change the look of the browser in seconds, with a choice that just boggles the mind. How often are you going to want to choose from over 30,000 different themes? Fashion is not all that Firefox is about however an there have been many changes under the hood that you may not notice. So let us fill in some of the details for you.

For Designers there is now support for CSS gradients as well as WOFF (these are small fonts that you can integrate into a website). This means that not only will you be able to make your sites look good, but they will load faster than ever before.

Oh and did we mention that Firefox 3.6 is fast? Firefox 3.6 is 20% faster than 3.5, and, if you remember, 3.5 was 3 times faster than Firefox 3. So on the whole, you cant get much faster without the safety that Firefox provides. This safety comes to you in the from of the new plug-in check feature that will allow you to see if your plug-ins are up-to-date, or if they need a little bit of an upgrade.

Programmers of the world. We did not forget you in the slightest. You can now add page orientation to your web apps thanks to the new orientation API. You can also use drag and drop functions as well as use the new FILE API to make your web apps more like desktop apps.

For all those out there that love to customize your browsing experience (with over 6000 Add-ons and over 30,000 Personas), to those of you that love to make the web better. Firefox 3.6 is the browser for you.

So visit www.firefox.com and enjoy a faster, safer and more secure way to use the web.

Lighting up the whole world!

Mozilla is coming up on a huge milestone soon. It happens to be the 5 year anniversary of Mozilla Firefox. Less than one week after November the 5th no less! How very dare they :P Well okay you may not get that but November the 5th is a big, big event in Lewes (find out more) and it involves a lot of light. If I had known at the a few months earlier that Mozilla planned to celebrate this anniversary with light, I would have done something spectacular. Now though. There is no chance for me to put plan A into action so now I am thinking of plan B. The idea of the whole “Light the world with Firefox” is to put together for the most creative uses of the Firefox logo with light.

Here are some of the ideas Mozilla have provided but don’t feel limited by these. Go do something creative!

  • Spotlight: Borrow a projectorand shine the Firefox logo on the wall during a Firefox party, or make a logo stencil and place it in front of a flashlight for a cool effect (think shadow puppets). Or, go crazy and get a searchlight to create your very own Firefox “bat signal“.
  • Mash-Up: Think of the most interesting way you can combine Firefox and light. For example, create the logo out of candles on a birthday cake, program your very own lite-brite or light show, or create a fun wallpaper! If you’re really have a lot of time on your hands (and skills) you could even create a light show.  The more creative, the better.
  • Mobile: Get the Firefox logo on your phone and take a picture holding it in front of a local landmark. Or, organize a bunch of friends for a big group photo with the logo on everyone’s phones.

There are other ways you can celebrate, including the good old fashioned party, which, should you host, you need to invite me to :P

There is also a facebook group as well as a twibbon! So you have no excuse for doing nothing to celebrate this one off event. There wont be another party quite like this for another 5 years! Make the most of it!

Oh, and one last thing of note. There is a hashtag for you to use for any videos, pictures or blog posts. #firefox 5

May 1st, 2009 by FuzzyFox with No Comments »

In fact the new Spread Firefox is sooooo cool that it needs to be spelt “kool”.

After the lanch of the new site being put off twice it is finally here for all to see, use and love. This is the sites thrid incarnation and this one is looking very promising. It strives to be more reflective of the great personalites that make up the Mozilla Community behind the greatest browser around.

There have been several changes that have happened between Spread Firefox 2 and Spread Firefox 3 but they have greatly improved the easy of use and make the whole experience a little more enjoyable. And for people who need a little help ajusting or even new users just finding their feet (THEY ARE AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR LEGS!) , there is a very helpful FAQ, a wonderful getting started guide, and documentation on what projects are and how to create them in a very impressive project guide.
